Why do I need a lawyer when dealing with an insurance company? Why can't I deal with the insurance company myself?
You don't need to have a lawyer. You will however be at a severe disadvantage in any dealings you have with the insurance company. Insurance companies retain professional adjusters who work for the company's interests. While they may purport to want to assist you, the bottom line is that they are hired to save the insurance company money usually at the expense of the claimant. In the case of an injury, you could not possibly know the true value of your claim.
Retaining a lawyer will result in a substantially higher settlement for you, even taking into account the fact that you will in the end pay the lawyer a portion of his fee. Part of that fee will usually also be paid by the insurance company.
